The Benue State House of Assembly has suspended four lawmakers for three months over allegations of attempting to impeach the Speaker, Hyacinth Dajoh.

Those affected are Alfred Berger (Makurdi North), Terna Shimawua (Kian), Cyril Ekong (Obi), and James Umoru (Apa). The decision was taken during plenary on Friday, marking a major shake-up in the Assembly’s leadership.

Following the suspension, the House quickly restructured its leadership positions:

Kennedy Angbo was appointed as the new Deputy Majority Leader.

Douglas Akya became the Deputy Chief Whip.

Elias Audu was named the new spokesman of the House.

In addition to the disciplinary action, the Assembly also began the screening of commissioner nominees sent in by the state governor. Five nominees faced the lawmakers, while Ogwu Odeh and Imojime Tiza are expected to be screened at a later date.

The suspension has sparked conversations across the state, as political observers say it reflects growing tension within the House.

Meanwhile, residents are watching closely to see how the leadership tussle and commissioner appointments will shape the state’s governance in the coming months.
