BENUE KILLINGS: WE MUST END THIS BLOODSHED – SULTAN OF SOKOTO

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has strongly condemned the ongoing violence in Benue State, declaring that the country must put an end to the senseless bloodshed.

In a firm message, the Sultan emphasized that such acts of violence—no matter the perpetrators’ race, ethnicity, or political leaning—have no place in Nigeria and must not be accepted.

Over 300 people have been killed in a series of brutal attacks since June 14, following an assault by armed herders on Yelewata in Guma Local Government Area.

The Sultan expressed disappointment in the failure of security agencies to prevent the attacks, a sentiment shared in a statement released by the Secretary-General of Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), Professor Khalid Abubakar Aliyu, titled “Time to rise beyond lamentations as Benue bleeds again.”

“Enough is enough,” the statement said. “Our continued silence or lack of action only strengthens the enemies of peace and unity in Nigeria.”

JNI called on God to comfort the grieving families and prayed for enduring peace in Benue State and across the nation.

“As we mourn alongside the people of Benue, this must be a moment of deep national reflection. We must reject all divisive narratives and stand together to say ‘No More’ to these needless killings. Every human life is sacred and should be treated with dignity, as we have consistently stated.”

JNI also extended its condolences to the government and people of Benue State, describing the tragedy as one no civilised society should ever consider normal.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
