The Benue State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to prioritising humanitarian response, safe return, and sustainable resettlement of internally displaced persons across the state.

The Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency, James Iorpuu, made this known on Thursday during the distribution of food and non-food items to IDPs in various camps and host communities.

Iorpuu said that although the relief materials cannot replace lost homes and livelihoods, they provide critical support and temporary stability as the government works towards lasting solutions.

He explained that the distribution process was guided by transparency, accountability, and fairness, adding that beneficiary data had been carefully verified to ensure that assistance reaches those genuinely affected.

“Government remains committed to supporting you not only with relief interventions but also with long-term recovery initiatives, including livelihood support, farming initiatives, and coordinated plans for safe return to your ancestral homes,” he said.

“Today’s exercise reflects that unwavering commitment. Every item released is intended strictly for the IDPs,” Iorpuu added.

According to him, the items distributed included essential food commodities to address immediate nutritional needs, as well as non-food items aimed at improving living conditions in camps and host communities.

He appreciated humanitarian partners, security agencies, community leaders, camp officials, and staff of the agency for their collaboration and called for continued support to strengthen the state’s response framework.

In January 2025, Governor Hyacinth Alia disclosed that about 1.5 million internally displaced persons were in the state. He made the revelation while receiving officials of the United States Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance in Makurdi, where he sought support to cater to the displaced persons.
