British International Investment (BII), the UK’s development finance institution, has committed over £1 billion to support African businesses in 2026, focusing on sectors critical to sustainable growth and job creation.

The investment package targets key areas including renewable energy, financial inclusion, agriculture, and technology-enabled enterprises across the continent. BII Chief Executive, Mr. Nick O’Donohoe, highlighted the commitment as part of the UK’s strategy to drive impactful development in Africa.

“Africa offers tremendous opportunities for inclusive and sustainable growth. Our investments aim to catalyse private capital and deliver long-term value for businesses and communities,” O’Donohoe said. The funding will support both established companies and high-potential startups.

The announcement has been welcomed by African governments and business leaders, who see it as a boost for economic resilience and climate action. BII’s move aligns with growing international interest in African markets.

The institution plans to deepen partnerships with local financial institutions and development agencies to maximise impact.
