BRAKE FAILURE CAUSES TRUCK TO HIT MINIBUS IN LAGOS, KILLING DRIVER
Tragedy struck on Sunday morning along Old Ipaja Road near Agbotikuyo, Lagos, when a truck rammed into a commercial minibus, commonly known as “Korope,” killing the driver and leaving three passengers injured.
The crash happened around 9 a.m. when a fully loaded 40-foot Mack container truck, bearing the registration number MUS 729 XY, reportedly suffered brake failure and crashed into the minibus en route to Iyana Ipaja in the Alimosho area.
This incident comes barely 48 hours after a separate accident involving two BRT buses at Cement Bus Stop in the same Alimosho area, which left several passengers — including a journalist — injured.
Confirming the incident, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, expressed condolences to the bereaved family and commended the swift intervention of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
Giwa said, “The unfortunate incident occurred on Sunday, June 22, 2025. The truck reportedly lost its brakes and fell onto the minibus, killing its driver on the spot. LASTMA officers arrived promptly and rescued three injured passengers — two women and a man — who were handed over to medical personnel for urgent care.”
The accident triggered heavy traffic congestion along Old Ipaja Road and adjoining areas like Shofunde and Olufunlayo. LASTMA officials quickly redirected traffic to ease the gridlock and restore normal flow.
Personnel from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), and the police worked together to recover the deceased driver’s body and secure the accident site.
The truck driver, who attempted to escape, was apprehended by LASTMA officials and handed over to the Elere and Area G Police Divisions.
Giwa called on truck owners and drivers to prioritise regular vehicle maintenance, especially brake systems, to avoid preventable tragedies.
“Safety must come first,” he said. “Vehicle roadworthiness is non-negotiable. The state remains committed to enforcing traffic safety rules to safeguard lives and property on our roads.”
