Brazil has lost one of its greatest musical treasures. Renowned jazz legend Hermeto Pascoal has died at the age of 89, his family confirmed on Saturday.

Fondly nicknamed “The Sorcerer”, Pascoal was celebrated for his extraordinary ability to turn almost anything into music — from traditional instruments to everyday objects. With his long white beard and hair, he was as iconic in appearance as he was in sound.

In a heartfelt statement on Instagram, Pascoal’s family said he passed away “with serenity and love,” surrounded by loved ones and fellow musicians. They added that, in a fitting tribute, his band was performing live on stage at the very moment of his passing — “just as he would have wished: making sound and music.”

Born in Alagoas state in northeastern Brazil, Pascoal rose to global fame through his groundbreaking collaborations, most notably with jazz great Miles Davis, who recorded some of his compositions. His genius and improvisational brilliance cemented him as a unique force in the world of music.

Tributes have been pouring in, with Brazilian singer Caetano Veloso describing him as “one of the highest points in the history of music in Brazil.”

Pascoal’s legacy as a virtuoso, innovator, and cultural icon will live on, inspiring generations of musicians worldwide.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
