Mohammed Uwais, a former Chief Justice of Nigeria, has died at the age of 88.

His passing was confirmed in the early hours of Friday by Ondo State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kayode Ajulo.

Uwais held the position of Chief Justice from 1995 until his retirement in 2006. After leaving office, he was appointed to lead the Presidential Electoral Reform Committee by the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

The committee, which aimed to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system, featured distinguished personalities including Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Dr. Olisa Agbakoba.

Details of his funeral are yet to be announced, while tributes from the legal, political, and civil society communities are anticipated in the coming days.
