BREAKING: SUPREME COURT AFFIRMS GOVERNOR OKPEBHOLO’S ELECTION VICTORY
The Supreme Court has upheld the election of Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State, confirming him as the duly elected governor.
In a unanimous ruling delivered on Thursday, a five-member panel led by Justice Mohammed Garba dismissed the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asuerinme Ighodalo, describing it as lacking in merit.
Ighodalo had approached the apex court seeking to overturn the results of the September 21, 2024, gubernatorial election in Edo State.
The court, however, ruled that there was no valid basis to set aside the earlier judgments of both the Court of Appeal and the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, which had declared Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, as the rightful winner.
According to the justices, the PDP candidate failed to provide credible and admissible evidence to back his claims that the election was riddled with irregularities such as over-voting and widespread non-compliance with the Electoral Act.
