British-nigerian Princess Opeyemi Bright Makes History As Uk’s Youngest Mayor, Promotes Youth And Diversity
At 29 years old, British-Nigerian Princess Opeyemi Bright has become the youngest mayor in the United Kingdom after being officially sworn in as the First Citizen of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.
Bright’s appointment is a landmark moment for both the Nigerian community and young leaders in British politics. Her inauguration on May 16 attracted wide attention as a reflection of growing diversity and the expanding influence of Nigerians in public service across the globe.
During her acceptance speech, Bright expressed deep gratitude, saying, “This achievement is a blessing. I am honoured to serve my borough and represent my Nigerian heritage with pride and integrity. I hope my leadership inspires others to step forward and lead.”
Born in the UK to Nigerian parents, Bright started her political career at 22 when she was elected as a councillor. Over the last seven years, she has worked tirelessly on initiatives aimed at empowering youth, fostering social inclusion, and boosting economic opportunities in her community.
Her dedication follows in the footsteps of her mother, Dr. Councillor Afolasade Bright, who served as Civic Mayor of Hackney from 2006 to 2007. Her father, Pastor Gbolahan Bright MBE, is a senior minister with the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).
Bright joins a growing number of Nigerians making significant contributions to politics worldwide, including UK Conservative Party Leader Kemi Badenoch, Labour MP Chi Onwurah, Canadian Minister Uzoma Asagwara, and U.S. Congresswoman Esther Agbaje.
As she embarks on her mayoral role, Princess Opeyemi Bright stands as an inspiring figure for young people and minority communities in the UK and beyond.
