BURUK BLAMES REFEREEING AFTER GALATASARAY’S CHAMPIONS LEAGUE LOSS

Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk has criticised the officiating after his side suffered a 3-1 defeat to Sporting CP in their opening Champions League fixture of the season. The Turkish champions started brightly and took an early lead, but Sporting recovered strongly in Lisbon to complete a comeback victory.

Galatasaray went ahead through an own goal from Sporting defender Gonçalo Inácio, but the hosts responded before half-time through Geny Catamo. Sporting then took control after the break, with Luis Suárez converting a penalty before Rodrigo Zalazar added a third goal from a free-kick to seal the victory.

Buruk was particularly unhappy with the referee’s decisions during the match and felt some of the calls played a significant role in Galatasaray losing their advantage. The coach's frustration came after his team had enjoyed long spells of possession and created opportunities, only for Sporting to become increasingly dangerous as the match progressed.

The defeat leaves Galatasaray needing a strong response in their next Champions League matches, especially with the competition featuring several difficult opponents. Sporting, meanwhile, have made an important start to their European campaign by collecting all three points against the Turkish side.

Buruk will now have to focus on correcting Galatasaray’s weaknesses ahead of their next European assignment, while the club’s supporters will hope the team can quickly recover from the disappointing opening-night result.
