CARABAO CUP SHOCK: GRIMSBY STUN MAN UTD AS AMORIM ADMITS ‘BEST TEAM WON’

Manchester United’s miserable start to the season continued on Wednesday night as they crashed out of the Carabao Cup following a dramatic penalty shootout defeat to League Two side Grimsby Town.

The Red Devils fell two goals behind in the first half after Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren struck for Grimsby. United clawed their way back into the game through Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire, forcing a penalty shootout at 2-2.

But the underdogs held their nerve, edging United 12-11 on penalties to book their place in the third round — leaving Old Trafford stunned.

Speaking after the game, United boss Ruben Amorim admitted his side were second-best on the night.

“I think the best team won, the only team that was on the pitch,” Amorim told reporters.
“We started without any intensity, completely lost in our pressing, and that made the difference. The players of Grimsby spoke really loud today. We lost — the best team won.”

The defeat piles more pressure on Amorim, as United remain winless this season, with fans now demanding answers to the team’s poor start.

For Grimsby, it was a historic night — one that will live long in the memories of their supporters as they marched past one of football’s biggest clubs.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
