CHAOS AS FLOODING SHUTS LAGOS AIRPORT TEMPORARY TERMINAL

Operations at the temporary terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) were thrown into disarray on Monday following heavy flooding that submerged parts of the facility and disrupted flight activities.

Passengers arriving and departing were stranded for several hours as water inundated key areas, forcing authorities to temporarily shut down the terminal. Airport officials attributed the flooding to poor drainage and intense rainfall that overwhelmed the existing infrastructure.

Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) spokesperson, Mr. Henrietta Yakubu, confirmed that emergency teams were deployed to manage the situation and redirect flights where possible. “We apologise for the inconvenience and are working to restore normalcy as quickly as possible,” she said.

Travellers expressed frustration over the disruption, with some missing connecting flights and others complaining about inadequate communication from airlines and airport management. The incident has renewed calls for urgent upgrades to airport infrastructure to mitigate climate-related risks.

FAAN assured that the main terminal remained operational and that lessons from the flooding would inform long-term solutions to prevent recurrence.
