CHELSEA’S YOUNGEST-EVER PLAYERS: FULL LIST OF TEENAGERS WHO MADE HISTORY

Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli has become the latest teenager to enter Chelsea’s record books after making his Premier League debut against Brentford last week at the age of 16 years and 255 days. The academy midfielder came off the bench late in the west London derby, becoming the club’s youngest-ever Premier League player. His appearance also made him the second 16-year-old to make his senior debut for Chelsea this season, following fellow academy midfielder Reggie Watson.

Nicoll-Jazuli and Watson were both involved in Xabi Alonso’s pre-season plans before being given competitive opportunities with the first team. Their appearances have taken the number of 16-year-olds to feature for Chelsea’s senior side in competitive matches to nine. The club’s youngest competitive debutants include players from different generations, with some going on to establish lengthy careers at Stamford Bridge while others made only a handful of appearances.

Ian Hamilton remains Chelsea’s youngest-ever player, having made his senior debut at 16 years and 138 days against Tottenham at White Hart Lane in March 1967. He scored Chelsea’s goal in a 1-1 draw and went on to make five appearances for the club. Kingsley Whiffen follows at 16 years and 157 days, with the Welsh goalkeeper making his only Chelsea appearance in the final league game of the 1966/67 season after manager Tommy Docherty rested Peter Bonetti ahead of the FA Cup final.

Reggie Walsh ranks third on the list at 16 years and 193 days after making his Chelsea debut as a substitute during the club’s 2024/25 UEFA Conference League campaign. Reggie Watson is fourth at 16 years and 226 days, having started the Carabao Cup third-round match against Leeds United and played the first half of Chelsea’s 6-3 comeback victory. Nicoll-Jazuli comes next at 16 years and 255 days, followed by Tommy Langley at 16 years and 274 days, Michael Woods at 16 years and 275 days, John Sparrow at 16 years and 283 days, and Michael Harrison at 16 years and 360 days.

Langley has made the most appearances among the players on the list, featuring 152 times for Chelsea and scoring 43 goals over six seasons after making his debut in November 1974. Woods made two appearances in the FA Cup before leaving the club in 2011, while Sparrow played 74 times and scored twice across six seasons before joining Exeter City. Harrison made 64 appearances after his 1957 debut before moving to Blackburn Rovers in 1962. The continued promotion of young academy players under Alonso adds to Chelsea’s long history of giving teenagers opportunities in the first team.
