The Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Kingsley Chinda, has resigned from his position as leader of the minority caucus in the 10th House, amid indications that he is aligning with the All Progressives Congress.

Chinda, who represents Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency of Rivers State and was elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, announced his resignation in a letter dated April 23, 2026, which was read on the floor of the House on Tuesday by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.

Although the lawmaker has not formally declared his exit from the PDP, his recent appearance before the APC screening committee alongside loyalists of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has intensified speculation about his defection to the ruling party.

In his resignation letter, Chinda thanked lawmakers for their support during his tenure as Minority Leader.

“It has been a profound honour and privilege to serve in this capacity, representing the collective interest of the minority caucus and contributing to the legislative work of the House,” he wrote.

He also pledged to continue carrying out his legislative duties despite stepping down from the leadership position.

“I remain fully committed to my duties as a member of the House and will continue to support the work of the legislature in every way possible,” the letter added.

Chinda became Minority Leader in June 2023 following consultations among opposition parties, especially the PDP, which held the highest number of minority seats in the House at the time.

During his time as Minority Leader, he was one of the leading voices of the opposition on major national issues, including constitutional amendments, electoral reforms, governance, and economic policies.

His resignation is seen as another major development in the ongoing political realignment in Rivers State, where alliances linked to former governor and current FCT Minister Nyesom Wike continue to reshape the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.

The resignation is expected to trigger consultations among opposition lawmakers over the selection of a new Minority Leader, a position traditionally nominated by the minority party with the largest number of seats in the House.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
