The cholera outbreak in Niger State has taken a troubling turn, with the death toll now at 16. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) confirmed over the weekend that more than 150 people have tested positive for the disease, while over 451 suspected cases have been recorded so far.

Dr. Gerida Birukila, Chief of UNICEF’s Kaduna Field Office, revealed these figures during a visit to the Emir of Minna, Alhaji Farouq Bahago. Represented by UNICEF Health Specialist Dr. Ahmed Tsofo, Dr. Birukila explained that while many of the confirmed patients have received treatment and been discharged, the rising numbers are cause for concern.

“This outbreak has already claimed 16 lives,” Dr. Tsofo said. “We are working closely with the government to contain it and prevent further spread.”

The visit to the Emir’s palace wasn’t just about cholera. UNICEF also raised concerns over other pressing health issues in the state, including polio, measles, and the low rate of exclusive breastfeeding among mothers. Plans are underway to roll out the new measles and rubella vaccines in October, while intensified campaigns for polio eradication are also on the horizon.

The Emir of Minna pledged full support from the traditional institution, stressing the need for unity in tackling public health challenges. “We will continue to work for the well-being of our people and support all efforts to eradicate these diseases,” he assured.

Health officials continue to urge residents to maintain proper hygiene, boil drinking water, and seek medical help immediately if symptoms such as severe diarrhea or vomiting occur. With strong collaboration between communities, the government, and partners like UNICEF, there is hope the outbreak can be brought under control before more lives are lost.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
