CHURCH BUILDINGS DEMOLISHED, DEEPER LIFE RAISES ALARM
The Deeper Life Bible Church has strongly criticized Lagos State agencies over the reported demolition of its properties across the state, alleging the actions were carried out without due process.
In a statement released on Thursday by its legal counsel, Nojim Tairu & Co., the church described the demolitions as acts of injustice and systematic intimidation against its institutions.
According to the church, branches located in Yaba, Olorunishola, and Lawanson were brought down by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), the Lagos State Building Control Agency, and Surulere Local Government, respectively.
The statement reads in part:
“Deeper Life Bible Church, known for its longstanding contributions to faith and community development across Lagos State and beyond, firmly denounces the recent unjust actions by the Lagos State Government and its agencies, which have deliberately targeted several of our church properties.
“In recent months, we have witnessed a troubling pattern of hostility from certain government bodies, resulting in harassment, threats of demolition, and unjust restrictions placed on our places of worship and community centres.”
The church argued that these actions infringed on the fundamental rights of its members and threatened religious freedom, justice, and property ownership within the state.
It appealed to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to swiftly intervene and investigate the situation. The church also reiterated its commitment to the rule of law and peaceful coexistence among communities.
In addition, Deeper Life called on fellow citizens, religious bodies, human rights organizations, and the international community to support its call for justice and protection of religious institutions.
“As a faith-based organization committed to spiritual growth, humanitarian service, and societal betterment, we will continue to stand for peace, justice, and truth,” the statement continued.
“We will not be silenced or intimidated by actions we consider unjust. We are ready to pursue every legal option available to protect our rights and preserve Deeper Life Bible Church as a place of faith and refuge.”
In response, Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, denied any targeted hostility towards the church. He clarified that the state government holds no grudge against Deeper Life, which he described as a valued partner.
“Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration harbours no ill will against Deeper Life. We have a strong relationship with the church,” Omotoso stated.
He explained that LAMATA, which is responsible for railway infrastructure, typically compensates for any demolitions related to such projects. However, he noted that one of the affected properties was brought down by a local government, calling it “a local matter.”
Omotoso also revealed that the issue is under investigation. “We’ve received complaints from members of the church, and I personally asked the Governor’s Special Adviser on Religious Matters (Christian) to step in and open discussions,” he said.
“This administration does not discriminate. While this incident is regrettable, it is being thoroughly looked into,” he concluded.
