Acclaimed Nigerian singer and music producer Cobhams Asuquo has shared candid insights about his experience navigating the music industry as a visually impaired artist.

In a recent interview with Hip TV, the ‘One Hit’ star revealed that his condition has pushed him to exert much more effort than many of his colleagues.

“My awareness of my visual impairment drives me to work five times harder than others,” he said. “There’s a general stereotype that people living with disabilities are incapable, and I’ve had to constantly prove that I’m not only capable but exceptional.”

Cobhams encouraged others living with disabilities to embrace their identity and find strength in it rather than avoid or redefine it with euphemisms.

“I think it’s perfectly fine to acknowledge your reality. The world may be leaning more toward sensitivity, which is good, but we also need to be honest with ourselves,” he stated. “Call it what it is, deal with it directly, and draw your strength from that place.”

He went on to clarify that while some refer to him as "visually impaired," he prefers to be direct about his condition. “I don’t have partial vision—I have no sight at all. I’m completely blind, and that’s okay. I’ve accepted it, and I even find humour in it sometimes.”

Cobhams concluded by reflecting on how his journey has shaped him: “This is who I am, and I embrace it. I believe my condition has made my story more inspiring and my achievements more significant.”

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
