Commuters using the Kagoro–Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway in Kaduna State have decried the poor condition of the road, citing heavy congestion, accidents, and worsening travel delays.

Road users said the expressway has become difficult to navigate, especially as parts of the road are flooded, and traffic has been reduced to a single usable lane.

Transport operators explained that journeys that normally take about one hour now stretch to three or four hours due to gridlock caused by ongoing road reconstruction and reckless driving by motorists and tricycle operators.

A transport union official said accidents on the route often lead to a complete standstill, leaving only pedestrians able to move through affected sections.

Students also complained about the situation, saying they struggle to cross the road safely due to speeding vehicles and poor pedestrian access, which sometimes causes lateness to school and missed lectures.

A driver who regularly uses the route called on the government to urgently complete repairs on the remaining lane to ease the hardship for commuters.

Meanwhile, a Kaduna State Vigilance Service officer said a joint task force set up by Governor Uba Sani has begun operations to manage traffic and reduce accidents, although he noted that more equipment is still needed to improve efficiency, especially at night.

Commuters are urging authorities to accelerate rehabilitation work to restore smooth movement and improve safety along the expressway.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
