CONSENSUS’LL PRODUCE RIGHT CANDIDATES, SAYS IYABO OBASANJO
Senator Iyabo Obasanjo has endorsed the use of consensus in political party candidate selection ahead of the 2027 general elections, asserting that it produces electable candidates rather than unpopular ones.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday, Obasanjo dismissed concerns that consensus could override the wishes of party members, emphasizing that parties will always consider grassroots popularity.
“I do believe that consensus can bring the right candidates because consensus does not mean that leadership ignores the will of the people; consensus means that they look at what the people are saying. No party wants to lose, so the party will not choose people who open them for a loss,” she said.
She explained that parties prioritize winning and would not risk presenting candidates without broad support. “The consensus is going to come towards people that can actually win on the ground… the party wants to win. So, they do not want to put the least popular person as the consensus candidate,” Obasanjo added.
The former Ogun Central senator also expressed confidence in her own prospects as she vies for the All Progressives Congress governorship ticket in Ogun State. She highlighted her political experience and anticipated support from her parents, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
The Electoral Act permits both consensus and direct primaries as valid methods for political party candidate selection. Ahead of the next general election, the APC has confirmed it will adopt the consensus approach for selecting its national leadership at the party convention scheduled for March 27–28, 2026, in Abuja.
