COURT STOPS INQUEST INTO CHIMAMANDA ADICHIE’S SON’S DEATH
A Lagos Coroner’s Court has suspended proceedings in the inquest into the death of Nkanu Adichie-Esege, the 21-month-old son of acclaimed Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, pending further directives from the Chief Coroner of Lagos State.
The inquest was launched following allegations by Adichie and her husband, Dr. Ivara Esege, that medical negligence at Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital contributed to their son’s death in January 2026. The hospital has denied the allegations.
The suspension came after issues were raised regarding the handling of the proceedings and an intervention linked to the Lagos State Attorney-General’s office. However, the Attorney-General has denied directing the court to halt the inquest, insisting that the decision rests solely with the coroner.
Coroner Atinuke Adetunji stated that the hearing would remain on hold until guidance is received from the Chief Coroner, Justice Mojisola Dada. No new date has been fixed for the continuation of the proceedings.
The case has attracted national attention since Adichie publicly accused the hospital of negligence. Separately, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria found a prima facie case of medical negligence and professional misconduct against some of the doctors involved, leading to disciplinary actions while investigations continue.
