The Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) has commenced testing and certification of electricity meters supplied under the World Bank’s Distribution Sector Reform Program (DISREP), ensuring that no meter is deployed without meeting national standards.

Speaking in Abuja, NEMSA Managing Director and Chief Electrical Inspector of the Federation, Engr. Tukur Tahir Aliyu, confirmed that samples of the 3.2 million meters are already in the agency’s laboratories for rigorous evaluation.

“We will not allow the deployment of any uncertified meters,” Aliyu emphasized. “All meters under the World Bank program are undergoing testing to guarantee quality and accuracy before installation.”

The DISREP aims to deliver 1.2 million meters by December 2024 and another 1.3 million in early 2025, as part of broader efforts to close Nigeria’s electricity metering gap.

Aliyu also highlighted the Presidential Metering Initiative, which targets an additional rollout of seven million meters across multiple phases—further reinforcing the push for transparency, consumer protection, and improved power sector accountability.
