Portugal has unveiled their squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Cristiano Ronaldo set to become the first male footballer to feature in six World Cup tournaments.

The 41-year-old forward was included in Portugal’s final squad by head coach Roberto Martínez, extending his remarkable international career and further cementing his place in football history.

Ronaldo’s inclusion had been widely anticipated, but it officially confirms another milestone for the Portugal captain, who already holds the men’s records for most international appearances and goals.

According to reports, Martínez also reflected on the emotional impact of the recent death of former Portugal international Diogo Jota, saying the squad would honour his memory throughout the tournament.

“He is our strength, our joy. Losing Diogo was an unforgettable and very difficult moment, but the very next day, it was up to all of us to fight for Diogo’s dream and for the example he always set in our national team,” Martínez said.

He added, “Diogo Jota’s spirit, strength, and example are the plus one and will always be the plus one.”

Portugal’s squad combines experienced stars with emerging talents, including Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Rúben Dias, João Félix, Rafael Leão, and Gonçalo Ramos.

Martínez is expected to carefully manage Ronaldo’s playing time during the tournament as Portugal pursues a strong World Cup campaign with what many consider one of the most talented squads in the competition.
