C’RIVER GOV URGES LAWYERS TO DEFEND DEMOCRACY
Bassey Otu has urged lawyers to defend democracy and challenge unconstitutional actions in Nigeria.
The governor, represented by Deputy Governor Peter Odey, spoke during the 2026 Bar Week of the Nigerian Bar Association in Calabar.
Addressing legal practitioners, he described lawyers as custodians of civilisation and called on them to remain firm in protecting justice, resisting actions that threaten democratic institutions, and speaking truth to power.
He also stressed that accountability is essential to democracy and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to respecting the independence of the judiciary.
Chairman of the Calabar branch, Enome Amatey, raised concerns over growing disregard for the rule of law, including disobedience to court orders and threats to institutions.
Representatives of the national Nigerian Bar Association also urged lawyers to uphold constitutionalism, ethical standards, and accountability ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The event focused on the theme: Rule of Law: Safeguarding Democracy, Ensuring Accountability.
