In a strategic effort to enhance tourism and improve air travel access, the Cross River State Government has unveiled plans to establish its own airline and construct a new airport in the state capital.

During a recent visit to the Lagos Aviation Academy, the State Commissioner for Aviation, Captain Imah Utum, shared updates on the ambitious project, noting that the government is currently seeking the necessary regulatory clearances. Applications for an Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and an Air Transport Licence (ATL) from the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development are already in progress.

“We are hopeful that we’ll obtain our ATL within the next 90 days,” Captain Utum said.

He also disclosed that Cross River State currently operates two Boeing 737-300 aircraft through a partnership with a domestic airline. To expand its fleet and improve services, the state is expecting the arrival of two CRJ-1000 jets, which will open up more routes and enhance passenger experience.

As part of a broader aviation roadmap, the government is investing in training and capacity building. According to Utum, the state aims to produce around 800 aviation professionals annually—including pilots, cabin crew, and flight dispatchers. He added that one pilot trainee is already close to completing their type rating certification.

On infrastructure, Captain Utum confirmed that the state plans to build a third airport to complement the current ones in Calabar and Obudu. He cited spatial limitations at the federally owned Margaret Ekpo International Airport in Calabar as the driving force behind the move.

“The Calabar airport cannot be expanded due to space constraints. That’s why we’re developing a new airport to support tourism and meet future demands,” he explained. “While construction of the Obudu airport continues, we’re also planning for an additional facility within Calabar.”

Utum emphasized that these aviation initiatives are part of a larger vision to establish Cross River as a leading destination for tourism and investment, building on its position as Nigeria’s second most visited state after Lagos.

“These projects will not only make Cross River more accessible but will also generate employment, attract investors, and stimulate economic growth,” he said.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
