CWC: TENSION CAUSED CHELSEA, PSG PLAYERS TO CLASH — ENRIQUE EXPLAINS
Paris Saint-Germain manager, Luis Enrique, has shed light on why tempers flared between his players and Chelsea’s after Sunday’s Club World Cup final in New Jersey.
Chelsea cruised to a 3-0 victory over PSG at the MetLife Stadium, thanks to goals from Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro. But what should have ended in routine celebrations turned into a tense scene, as players and staff from both sides became entangled in a heated scuffle right after the final whistle.
Speaking to reporters, Enrique explained that the brawl was simply a result of high pressure and emotions boiling over after the match.
“There was pushing and shoving, a lot of tension and pressure,” Enrique said.
“The situation obviously should have been avoided. My intention was clearly to just try to separate the players.”
Despite Enrique’s explanation, TV cameras caught the PSG boss with his hand around the neck area of Chelsea’s Joao Pedro, a moment that quickly spread across social media and sparked debate.
Enrique, however, insisted he was only trying to calm things down and keep players from doing anything rash.
The fiery end put a slight shadow over Chelsea’s impressive triumph, but both teams will now look to regroup as they return to their domestic campaigns. Meanwhile, fans hope the drama stays on the pitch — and doesn’t spill over once the teams meet again.
