Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals is set to become the first industrial facility to deploy a newly launched artificial intelligence platform aimed at improving efficiency, output and operational reliability.

The platform, Forge Plant Cognition, is expected to help the Lekki-based refinery improve how it manages its refining and petrochemical operations.

Preliminary assessments suggest the technology could deliver gross operational benefits of more than 29 cents per barrel. At full refining capacity, that could amount to over $60 million annually.

However, the estimate is based on preliminary data specific to the refinery. Actual benefits will depend on operating conditions.

The deployment marks a further step in the refinery’s adoption of digital technology as it seeks to increase productivity and support its expansion plans.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer David Bird said the investment reflected the company’s commitment to improving performance and developing Nigerian engineering talent.

He added that the technology would help the refinery get greater value from its operations while equipping its workforce to operate at international standards.
