Nigerian defender earns top honours after standout performances in Egypt

Flying Eagles captain Daniel Bameyi has been named in the Team of the Tournament at the 2025 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, recognizing his influential role in Nigeria’s campaign in Egypt.

The 19-year-old defender featured in all six of Nigeria’s matches, contributing a goal and showcasing impressive leadership and consistency at the heart of the defence. His outstanding form also earned him a place in the Team of the Group Stage, underlining his status as one of the competition’s top performers.

Tournament winners South Africa and runners-up Morocco dominated the final squad, with four players each making the list. Sierra Leone’s striker Momoh Kamara, who finished as the tournament’s top scorer with four goals, and Egypt’s midfield maestro Mohamed Goweily were also included in the elite lineup.

In the coaching category, Raymond Mdaka of South Africa was awarded Coach of the Tournament after leading his side to a memorable championship win.

The 2025 AFCON U-20 tournament not only highlighted the depth of talent across the continent but also cemented Bameyi’s reputation as one of Africa’s most promising young defenders.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
