DARKOO: “WOMEN DECIDE WHAT MUSIC BECOMES POPULAR”
British-Nigerian singer Darkoo has shared her thoughts on the influence women have in shaping global music trends.
Speaking on the Comfortably Speaking podcast, the ‘Favourite Girl’ crooner explained that women often determine which songs and genres gain traction, as their preferences strongly influence men’s music choices.
Darkoo pointed to the rise of Amapiano, the South African sound that took the world by storm, as an example. According to her, the genre became mainstream after women began creating dance trends to its beats on social media.
“The truth of the matter is music, the world in general, is dictated by women. You play Sexyy Red in your car, why? Because you’re picking up a girl—you want her to vibe, so you play what she likes,” Darkoo said.
She further stressed that many popular songs today owe their success to women’s support and influence, both online and offline.
Darkoo’s comments highlight how cultural trends, especially in music, are often shaped by women’s choices and the social impact they create.
