DEFECTIONS OF KEY PDP FIGURES TO APC SIGNAL MAJOR SHIFTS AHEAD OF 2027 ELECTIONS
Former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, current Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and several prominent figures from the Delta chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The high-profile move, which includes local government chairmen, is expected to significantly impact the political landscape ahead of the 2027 presidential elections.
This defection is seen as a strategic move that bolsters President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign, especially in the South-South region. The South-South, a historically stronghold of the PDP, is now shaping up as a key battleground. With APC gaining traction in Delta State, which has been traditionally dominated by the PDP, the political dynamics in the region are shifting.
The defections have also sparked speculation that the trend could spread to other South-South states, such as Akwa Ibom and Rivers, potentially reshaping the region’s political future. Critics, including former PDP Deputy National Chairman Bode George, argue that the defections highlight a weakening of the PDP’s internal unity, with accusations that APC is pressuring party members to switch allegiances.
The exit of these key PDP figures further strengthens the APC's position in Southern Nigeria, especially with the growing support of ethnic groups in Delta, such as the Urhobo. This shift could impact the political trajectory of surrounding states, giving the APC an edge in future elections.
In addition, long-standing lawmaker Oluwole Oke from Osun State has announced his resignation from the PDP, citing consultations with his political associates as his reason for leaving the party.
As Nigeria’s 2027 elections approach, these defections mark the beginning of potential widespread political realignments, signaling that further shifts in allegiances are likely in the coming months.
