DEFECTIONS TO APC MARK SIGNIFICANT SHIFT IN KANO STATE POLITICS
In a significant shift in Kano's political landscape, a group of prominent elders from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), loyal to former Kano State Governor Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, have officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The announcement was made by Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, via his verified Facebook page.
Motivations Behind the Defections
Senator Barau welcomed the defectors, highlighting their reasons for joining the APC. He emphasized the party's notable contributions in the areas of infrastructure, empowerment, and employment across the region, which he said had greatly benefitted the defectors. “Even as PDP members, they acknowledged the positive impact of our interventions in infrastructure, empowerment, and job creation,” Barau explained. This recognition, he said, was key in motivating their return to APC.
The group, led by Hon. Lawan Abubakar Tsanyawa, included several high-profile figures such as former members of the Shura Council, Hisbah commanders, ex-legislators, and former local government chairmen. They formally announced their defection during a visit to Senator Barau’s residence in Abuja.
APC’s Growing Influence in Kano
Senator Barau reassured the defectors that they would be fully integrated into APC, noting that many of them were previously part of the party before aligning with the PDP. “They are not strangers to the APC. They will be treated fairly and equally now that we’re reunited,” he added, emphasizing the inclusive nature of the party.
This defection adds to a broader political realignment in Kano State, with APC’s increasing influence ahead of the 2027 elections. The party's strategic focus on development and leadership sincerity continues to attract key political figures.
Additional Political Shifts in Kano
In a related development, Senator Barau also received a group from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Bichi Local Government Area, led by former council chairman, Alhaji Saleh Rabiu Yusuf (DanGwarzo). The defectors cited the successful projects under APC leadership and the party’s commitment to good governance as key reasons for their decision to join the ruling party.
These recent defections are seen as a sign of a shifting political tide in Kano, with more political figures aligning themselves with APC. This trend further solidifies the party’s growing influence in the region as the country approaches the 2027 presidential elections.
