DEJI ADEYANJU LAMENTS SOCIAL MEDIA MORALITY DECLINE AMONG YOUTHS
Abuja-based human rights activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju has expressed concern over what he describes as a growing moral decline among Nigerian youths.
Speaking on a podcast clip that circulated online, he said many young women now expose themselves on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, while some young men are involved in internet fraud, popularly known as “yahoo”.
Adeyanju claimed the trend reflects a broader collapse in discipline and values among the younger generation.
He also referenced a visit to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, saying he was shocked by the number of teenagers allegedly involved in cybercrime.
According to him, some suspects were as young as 15 to 18 years old, which he said highlights the severity of the problem.
He further linked the issue to broader societal challenges, including a lack of opportunity and declining moral standards.
Adeyanju, however, said he does not place all the blame on young people, arguing that older generations also contributed to the situation through systemic failures.
He added that meaningful solutions are needed at both short-term and long-term levels to address youth behaviour, crime, and social values.
The remarks have sparked online debate, with mixed reactions on whether his comments reflect reality or overgeneralise youth behaviour in Nigeria.
