A Magistrate Court sitting in Asaba, Delta State, has granted bail to self-acclaimed human rights activist, Victor Ojei, popularly known as WongBox.

Ojei was arraigned by the Delta State Police Command, led by Commissioner of Police Olufemi Abaniwonda, on a three-count charge bordering on threat to life, assault occasioning harm, and threatening violence. These charges are contrary to Sections 355, 86, and 249 of the Criminal Code.

Following his arraignment, the court set stringent bail conditions, which Ojei eventually met. He was promptly released, thanks to the intervention of several civil society organisations led by Harrison Gwamnishu and Harrison Itulua, who rallied around to support him.

Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer for Delta State, SP Bright Edafe, wrote on Facebook:

“Self-acclaimed activist Victor Ojei, popularly known as WongBox, was today arraigned and remanded in prison custody pending when his bail conditions are met. He was charged to court on three count charges of threat to life, assault occasioning harm, and threatening violence. Nobody is above the law.”

The case has since sparked discussions within activist circles, with many stressing the need to balance human rights advocacy with accountability under the law.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
