Relief is on the way for motorists and residents as the Delta State Government has awarded a ₦35 billion contract for the reconstruction of the Warri-Sapele-Benin Road, one of the state’s busiest and most problematic highways.

The contract was awarded to the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and will cover a 10-kilometre stretch of the dual carriageway — five kilometres on each side — with an expanded width of 11.6 metres and 2.8-metre shoulders. The project will also include stormwater drains, reinforced concrete pavement, and a durable wearing course to ensure long-lasting results.

According to the state government, the reconstruction is expected to be completed within 12 months.

Commissioner for Works and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, explained that the project is part of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s M.O.R.E development agenda, which focuses on infrastructure renewal and sustainable urban growth.

Although the road is technically a federal (Trunk A) road, it has long been left in a deplorable state, with failed portions causing traffic gridlock, accidents, and insecurity. The state’s intervention, Aniagwu said, was necessary to restore smooth movement and boost Delta’s position as a commercial hub in the South-South.

When completed, the rebuilt road is expected to:

Ease traffic congestion along the corridor.

Improve connectivity within Delta and to neighbouring states.

Enhance socio-economic activities, benefiting businesses and commuters.

This intervention also comes shortly after the state government completed the Asaba-Kwale-Isoko-Ughelli highway, reinforcing Governor Oborevwori’s commitment to delivering quality infrastructure that drives inclusive growth and prosperity.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
