DELTA STATE GOVERNOR OBOREVWORI DUMPS PDP FOR APC, CALLS IT A ‘MOVEMENT’ FOR PROGRESS
Delta State witnessed a major political shift as Governor Sheriff Oborevwori officially moved from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), taking with him the entire PDP structure in the state. The announcement was made during a high-level meeting at the Unity Hall in Government House, Asaba, which was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima and other key figures in the APC. Governor Oborevwori described the move not as a defection, but as a "movement" aimed at fostering unity and driving development in the state. He explained that the decision followed extensive consultations with stakeholders, including elected officials and political leaders, and was made in the interest of Delta’s progress.
Former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, who also played a central role in the transition, emphasized that the shift was necessary to align the state with the federal government, thereby unlocking greater opportunities for development. Vice President Shettima, representing President Bola Tinubu, welcomed the defectors warmly, describing the development as a political tsunami that marks a significant realignment in Nigerian politics. He encouraged the new APC members to see themselves as stakeholders and co-owners of the party.
Delta North Senator Ned Nwoko and Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo were also present. Nwoko urged the governor to embrace new ideologies in line with APC’s agenda, while Keyamo officially recognized Oborevwori as the new political leader of the APC in the state. Governor Oborevwori assured party members that there would be no parallel structures within the party and pledged unity, stating that he is fully in charge and committed to building a cohesive political front in Delta.
The defection is expected to have wide-reaching implications for the South-South region, where the APC is aiming to increase its influence. Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River, also present at the event, suggested that the shift was a response to President Tinubu’s inclusive leadership, and hinted that more states in the region could follow Delta’s lead. The high-profile gathering of APC governors, senators, and stakeholders underscored the strategic importance of the move in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.
