The Federal Government has announced the introduction of a national digital postcode system designed to enhance the accuracy of census exercises, improve election planning, and streamline service delivery across the country.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, revealed that the system would assign unique digital addresses to every location, making it easier to map populations, plan infrastructure, and organise electoral processes. “A reliable digital postcode system is foundational for effective governance and development planning,” Tijani said.

The initiative is expected to significantly improve data collection for the next population census and reduce logistical challenges during elections. It will also benefit sectors such as logistics, emergency response, and taxation.

Stakeholders have welcomed the move, noting its potential to modernise governance and support evidence-based policymaking. The government plans a phased rollout with extensive public sensitisation.

The digital postcode project is part of Nigeria’s broader digital transformation agenda aimed at leveraging technology for national development.
