Electricity distribution companies (DisCos) across Nigeria have reported 17 deaths resulting from electrocution incidents in the first three months of the year, raising fresh concerns about safety standards in the power sector.

The figures, released by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), highlight ongoing challenges with infrastructure maintenance, illegal connections, and public awareness on electrical safety. Several incidents were linked to fallen conductors, vandalism, and unauthorised access to power installations.

Industry regulators have urged DisCos to intensify maintenance efforts, replace ageing infrastructure, and strengthen community sensitisation campaigns. They also called on the public to avoid tampering with electrical equipment and report hazardous situations promptly.

Stakeholders emphasised that while some progress has been made in reducing outages, safety must remain a top priority to protect lives and property. Experts believe that improved investment in network infrastructure and enforcement of safety regulations could significantly reduce such tragic incidents.

The NERC has vowed to hold operators accountable and work with relevant agencies to enhance overall safety in electricity supply. The development serves as a reminder of the human cost of infrastructural deficits in the power sector.
