Professional divers and the International Marine Contractors Association are working to address training and certification gaps affecting Nigeria’s diving and offshore marine industry.

Stakeholders said the initiative is aimed at improving professional standards and ensuring that divers operating in Nigeria meet internationally recognised safety and competency requirements.

They noted that the growth of offshore oil and gas, marine construction, subsea operations, and other maritime activities has increased the demand for properly trained and certified diving professionals.

Industry operators said gaps in access to specialised training and internationally recognised certification could limit opportunities for Nigerian divers and reduce the participation of local professionals in major offshore projects.

They called for stronger collaboration among training institutions, regulators, industry associations, and international certification bodies to improve access to relevant programmes.

Stakeholders also stressed the importance of practical training, modern equipment, safety procedures, and continuous professional development.

They said improving certification standards would not only strengthen safety but also help Nigerian divers compete for opportunities in the international offshore industry.

The initiative is expected to support the development of local expertise and increase indigenous participation in Nigeria’s growing blue economy.

Industry experts urged companies operating in the maritime and offshore sectors to invest in workforce development and ensure that their personnel maintain valid professional certifications.

They said closing the training and certification gaps would strengthen Nigeria’s marine workforce and improve the country’s ability to provide skilled personnel for complex offshore operations.

Stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to developing a more skilled, certified, and internationally competitive diving workforce in Nigeria.
