EARLY 2027 CAMPAIGNS COULD SPARK SECURITY CRISIS – EX-DSS CHIEF WARNS INEC
Stop APC, ADC’s Early Campaigns or Risk Security Threats – Mike Ejiofor Tells INEC
Former Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mike Ejiofor, has raised serious concerns over early political campaigns by parties like the All Progressives Congress (APC) and African Democratic Congress (ADC), warning that these activities could worsen Nigeria’s already fragile security situation.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News, Ejiofor urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to go beyond warnings and take concrete action against political parties engaging in pre-election activities almost two years ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Every well-meaning and patriotic Nigerian should be worried about these premature campaigns,” Ejiofor said. “We already have major security issues in the country, and these political movements are adding unnecessary pressure.”
According to him, more than 80% of Nigeria’s security challenges are politically driven, and the recent wave of endorsements, alignments, and internal party activities is further fueling tensions.
He pointed out that while the ADC already has three declared presidential aspirants, the APC appears set to endorse President Bola Tinubu for re-election. Meanwhile, the Labour Party is dealing with internal crises.
“It’s too early for parties to be forming alliances and declaring candidates. The government should be focused on governance right now, not 2027 politics,” he added.
Ejiofor welcomed INEC’s recent warning to political parties but insisted that more must be done to prevent future security problems.
“It’s not enough for INEC to issue a warning. They must take real action to stop these premature political moves that could strain our security agencies even further,” he said.
