The Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Mustapha Abdullahi, has denied reports claiming he was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over an alleged ₦500 billion fraud investigation.

Reacting to the reports making rounds online and in sections of the media, Abdullahi clarified that he was not detained by the anti-graft agency but merely responded to an official invitation in line with due process.

The clarification was contained in a statement issued by his media aide, Abdulrasaq Danjuma, who described the reports of an arrest as misleading.

According to the statement, the ECN boss voluntarily honoured the EFCC invitation as a public official committed to accountability, transparency, and cooperation with lawful authorities.

“It is important to clarify that he was not arrested, but attended the engagement voluntarily as a responsible public servant committed to transparency and accountability,” the statement read.

Abdullahi also appealed to the public to avoid spreading speculation, sensational narratives, and unverified claims capable of distorting facts or creating unnecessary tension around the matter.

He stressed that the allegations currently being discussed publicly remain subjects of investigation and should be treated within the framework of the law.

The ECN chief further urged supporters, associates, and stakeholders to remain calm while the relevant authorities carry out their constitutional responsibilities.

“At this time, we respectfully urge supporters, associates, stakeholders, and members of the public to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding while the appropriate authorities carry out their constitutional responsibilities,” the statement added.

He also emphasized the principle of presumption of innocence, noting that every individual is entitled to fair treatment under the law until proven guilty by a competent court.

“In line with established principles of justice and fairness, every individual is entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven otherwise by a court of competent jurisdiction,” he stated.

The development follows widespread reports alleging that the EFCC had arrested the ECN Director-General in connection with an alleged ₦500 billion fraud case, claims which the commission boss has now publicly denied.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
