ECOWAS LAUNCHES LPG 20/20 INITIATIVE IN SIERRA LEONE TO BOOST CLEAN COOKING
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has launched its Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG 20/20) Initiative in Sierra Leone, marking a major step toward expanding access to clean and affordable cooking energy across the region.
The LPG 20/20 initiative aims to significantly increase the adoption of cooking gas as an alternative to traditional fuels like firewood and charcoal. These conventional methods are widely used but come with serious health and environmental risks, including indoor air pollution and deforestation.
By promoting LPG usage, ECOWAS hopes to improve public health, reduce environmental degradation, and ease the burden on households especially women and children who are often most affected by unsafe cooking practices.
The launch in Sierra Leone is part of a broader regional strategy to accelerate energy transition and improve energy access across West Africa. Through partnerships with governments, private sector players, and development organizations, the initiative will support infrastructure development, policy reforms, and public awareness campaigns.
In practical terms, this means more households gaining access to cleaner cooking options, better distribution networks for LPG, and potentially lower costs through increased supply and investment.
Energy experts say the move is timely, as many countries in the region are looking for sustainable ways to meet growing energy demands while addressing climate and health challenges.
For Sierra Leone and the wider ECOWAS region, the LPG 20/20 initiative represents more than just an energy project—it’s a pathway to healthier homes, a cleaner environment, and improved quality of life.
In simple terms, cleaner cooking isn’t just about convenience it’s about safety, sustainability, and a better future for millions.
