The Edo State Government has demolished several illegal structures built under high-tension power lines in parts of Benin City, citing safety risks and the need to protect lives and public infrastructure.

The operation, carried out by the Edo State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development in collaboration with security agencies on Friday, targeted buildings and shops constructed in violation of safety regulations in areas such as Sapele Road and Airport Road.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mrs. Osasere Eribo, said the demolition was necessary to prevent potential disasters. “Building under high-tension wires is extremely dangerous. We cannot continue to allow people to put their lives at risk. This exercise will serve as a deterrent to others,” Eribo stated.

Residents and business owners whose structures were affected expressed mixed reactions. While some accepted the exercise as necessary for public safety, others complained about the lack of prior notice and the economic impact on their livelihoods. The government has promised to provide support and guidance for affected persons to relocate to approved areas.

The Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) commended the state government for the action, noting that illegal structures under power lines often cause faults, power outages, and safety hazards for both residents and workers.

The Edo State Government warned that more demolition exercises will be carried out in other parts of the state to enforce building regulations and ensure compliance with safety standards. It urged the public to always obtain necessary approvals before embarking on any construction project.

The demolition exercise is part of a broader urban renewal and safety campaign by the state government aimed at creating a more organised and secure environment for residents and investors. Officials say similar operations will be intensified in other cities and towns across Edo State in the coming weeks.
