The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Hon. Dennis Idahosa, has directed that Primary Healthcare Centres across rural communities in the state be strengthened to improve access to quality medical services for residents.

Idahosa gave the directive on Friday in Benin while chairing the fourth quarterly meeting of the Edo State Primary Health Care Task Force. He challenged local government chairmen to prioritise healthcare delivery at the grassroots, stressing that rural dwellers deserve accessible and reliable health services.

According to the deputy governor, improving rural PHCs is crucial ahead of the Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccination campaign scheduled for 2026. The campaign targets children between nine months and 14 years, regardless of whether they have previously received vaccinations. He explained that the goal of the exercise is to strengthen immunity and protect children across the state.

Idahosa emphasised that no child should be left out of the vaccination drive, calling on all stakeholders to work together to ensure its success. He described health as a key pillar of the SHINE agenda of Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration, noting that sustained efforts have been made to expand access to essential healthcare services.

Reflecting on the year’s progress, the deputy governor expressed satisfaction with the achievements recorded in the health sector, attributing them to teamwork and strong collaboration with development partners. He also acknowledged the support and guidance of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency in aligning Edo State’s interventions with national health priorities.

Looking ahead, Idahosa said the first quarter of 2026 would be busy, as the task force plans to carry out inspections and direct engagements with health workers across the state’s 192 PHCs in all 18 local government areas. He stressed the importance of visiting facilities to assess conditions firsthand rather than relying on reports from the state capital.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr Cyril Oshiomhole, alongside other key stakeholders, contributed to discussions at the meeting. Since the current administration assumed office, all primary healthcare centres in the state have remained operational, ensuring that rural communities continue to access essential medical care.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
