EFCC: HOW YAHOO BOYS ARE MAKING VISA ACCESS HARDER FOR NIGERIANS

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has raised alarm over the impact of internet fraud on Nigeria’s global image and its ripple effects on ordinary citizens.

According to EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede, the rising cases of “Yahoo Yahoo” scams are one of the reasons many Nigerians now face tougher visa restrictions when applying to travel abroad.

Speaking at an event in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Olukoyede — represented by Chief Superintendent CSE Coker Oyegunle — explained that cybercrime and related fraud not only damage the future of those involved but also cost Nigeria billions of naira yearly, affecting jobs, infrastructure, and opportunities.

“Fraud is not success; it is a trap. Many who follow the path of Yahoo-Yahoo end up losing their freedom, reputation, and future. Digital footprints never disappear,” he cautioned.

He stressed that beyond the economic losses, fraudulent practices have tarnished Nigeria’s international reputation, making innocent citizens suffer stricter immigration checks and visa denials.

The EFCC boss urged Nigerian youths to redirect their creativity and energy into positive ventures like technology, entrepreneurship, agriculture, and the creative industry instead of shortcuts that lead to ruin.

The agency also reaffirmed its commitment to intensify sensitisation campaigns and enforcement against cybercrime.

Recently, the EFCC arrested 38 suspected internet fraudsters in Lagos and secured convictions of 12 fraudsters in Benin, including two brothers, who were sentenced for advance fee fraud and possession of fraudulent documents.

With tougher global scrutiny, the EFCC is warning that internet fraud doesn’t only trap offenders — it’s also making life harder for millions of innocent Nigerians abroad
