Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El‑Rufai has been granted temporary bail by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) following the death of his mother, Hajiya Umma El‑Rufai.

The bail was approved to allow El‑Rufai to attend and oversee funeral rites for his late mother, who died in Cairo, Egypt, after a period of illness. She was reportedly around 100 years old.

His son, Bashir El‑Rufai, confirmed the release in a post on X (formerly Twitter), thanking supporters and highlighting the family’s resilience during this difficult time.

Hajiya Umma’s passing comes just days after the family also lost El‑Rufai’s daughter‑in‑law, Safiya Ali Rufai, compounding the family’s grief.

Tributes have poured in from senior Nigerian figures, including President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, who all praised the late matriarch’s life and legacy.

Political figures from across the spectrum, such as former presidential candidate Peter Obi, also expressed condolences and offered prayers for El‑Rufai and his family.

El‑Rufai had been in ICPC custody amid ongoing legal proceedings involving allegations of financial misconduct, but the temporary bail was granted specifically to enable him to fulfil cultural and family obligations following his mother’s death.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
