EL-RUFAI SLAMS KADUNA POLICE OVER SUMMON, CALLS IT VIOLATION OF CONSTITUTION

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has strongly criticized the Kaduna State Police Command after being summoned over a meeting of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The police had earlier stopped the ADC from holding its scheduled meeting in the state and later summoned El-Rufai alongside seven party members. They were accused of criminal conspiracy, incitement of public disturbance, mischief, and causing grievous hurt.

The summons directed the ADC Chairman to produce El-Rufai and the others at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) on September 8.

Reacting during a press conference at his Kaduna residence, El-Rufai described the police action as unconstitutional and unlawful.

“The commissioner knows what he is doing violates the Constitution. He waved a piece of paper claiming it was a court order, but it was never served. Even if such an order exists, it must be legally delivered before it can take effect. That has not happened,” El-Rufai said.

He further warned that the move by the police was a “dangerous descent into lawlessness” and vowed to challenge it in court.

“We want to see that injunction, we want to know the grounds, and we will contest them. This is not the end—further steps will follow,” he added.

The controversy has raised fresh concerns about political rights, freedom of assembly, and the role of security agencies in Kaduna State’s political space.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
