Elon Musk Slams Federal Spending Bill Backed By Trump As "disgusting Abomination"
Elon Musk has strongly criticised a major tax and spending bill endorsed by former President Donald Trump, denouncing it as a “disgusting abomination.”
The bill, which the House of Representatives passed last month, includes extensive tax cuts, increases in defence spending, and authorises a large boost in federal borrowing. Economic analysts estimate that the legislation will add approximately $600 billion to the national deficit in the upcoming fiscal year.
“I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination,” Musk wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”
Musk’s remarks came just one day before he officially stepped down as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a post he had held for four months. His resignation drew attention, given his previously close relationship with Trump.
In response to speculation about a rift, the official X CEO account shared a post clarifying that Musk’s departure was not due to any falling out with the former president, but rather because of his status as a Special Government Employee—a designation that limits service to 130 days.
“In the coming days, legacy media will try to convince you that President Trump and Elon Musk are no longer friends and that’s why Musk left,” the post stated. “What they won’t tell you is that Elon was a Special Government Employee, limited to 130 days of service, and that term ends tomorrow.”
Before stepping down, Musk expressed disappointment that the bill increased the federal deficit, which he said undermined the DOGE team’s work. “I think a bill can be big, or it can be beautiful, but I don’t know if it can be both, in my personal opinion,” he commented.
