ELON MUSK–OWNED X RESTORED AFTER BRIEF SERVICE DISRUPTION
Social media platform X, owned by U.S. tech billionaire Elon Musk, has been restored after users experienced a brief service disruption on Friday.
Users in Nigeria reported difficulties accessing the platform around 3:00 p.m. before normal service was later reinstated.
Data from outage-tracking website DownDetector showed a sharp spike in reports, with more than 45,000 users logging complaints as of 8:38 p.m. on January 16, 2026. This marked a significant jump from the usual baseline of about 18 reports.
During the outage, many users encountered Cloudflare’s “Connection timed out” error, preventing the platform from loading properly.
As of the time of filing this report, X had not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
The disruption comes days after a global outage on January 13, 2026, and follows a similar incident recorded on November 18, 2025, which also left users temporarily offline.
