Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has revealed his conversation with Gianluigi Donnarumma after the Italian goalkeeper chose to join Manchester City instead of the Red Devils.

Donnarumma, who signed for City this summer in a £26 million move from Paris Saint-Germain, made his Premier League debut in Sunday’s Manchester Derby — a game City won 3-0 thanks to goals from Phil Foden and Erling Haaland (2).

Speaking on Premier League Productions, Schmeichel disclosed that he had tried to convince Donnarumma to join United before the transfer.

“Over the last season I kept saying to him, ‘we want you at Man United,’ and he said, ‘I’d love to come to England,’” Schmeichel said.

“So after the game I went up to him and said, ‘what are you doing here? You should be in the other goal [for United].’ But he told me, ‘I’m very, very happy here.’ And he showed that today.”

The defeat to City marked United’s second loss of the season, leaving them 14th in the table with just four points from four games under Ruben Amorim.
