EPL: EMERY ADMITS FRUSTRATION OVER ELLIOTT’S FAILED LOAN AT VILLA
Unai Emery has admitted frustration over Harvey Elliott’s disappointing loan spell at Aston Villa, describing the situation as difficult for both the club and the player.
Elliott, who joined Villa on a season-long loan from Liverpool FC, has struggled for regular playing time at Villa Park.
The 23-year-old midfielder has made just four Premier League appearances this season, accumulating only 109 minutes in the competition.
Reports indicate the loan deal included an obligation for Aston Villa to sign Elliott permanently for £35 million if he reached 10 league appearances, a clause that will not be activated due to his limited involvement.
Speaking on the situation, Emery acknowledged the challenges surrounding the arrangement.
“To explain the reason for this decision is very difficult, or it is easy, but it is not the moment.
“My apologies for Harvey Elliott are, every day, in my mind. We have our responsibility, and Liverpool have their responsibility. How the season has gone has been difficult,” he said.
Villa reportedly explored terminating the loan agreement early during the January transfer window, but discussions with Liverpool did not produce an agreement.
Elliott’s only Premier League start came against Fulham FC earlier in the campaign, where he was substituted at half-time.
He has not featured in the league since February.
Despite his struggles at the club level, Elliott recently enjoyed success with the England national under-21 football team, helping the side win the 2025 UEFA European Under-21 Championship and finishing as the tournament’s best player after scoring five goals.
His limited game time at Villa has nevertheless raised questions about his long-term development and future role under Liverpool manager Arne Slot.
Elliott is expected to attract interest from clubs across England and Europe ahead of the summer transfer window.
