EQUINIX EXPANDS FABRIC GEO ZONES TO STRENGTHEN SOVEREIGN DATA ROUTING ACROSS GLOBAL NETWORKS

Equinix, the world’s largest data centre and interconnection company, has announced a major global expansion of its Fabric Geo Zones. The move gives enterprises greater control over data sovereignty across hybrid and multi-cloud environments.

The company made the announcement on May 14, 2026. Fabric Geo Zones is described as the first network-level solution that prevents data from crossing borders during routine network rerouting, failover, or congestion  a common risk that can lead to compliance violations.

Many African countries and global businesses are increasingly concerned about data sovereignty due to strict regulations around where sensitive data can be stored and processed. Equinix’s new offering allows organisations to define specific geographic zones so that their data stays within approved borders at the network level.

Key Benefits

  • Enforces geographic boundaries directly in the network
  •
  • Works across multiple clouds and service providers
  •
  • Reduces compliance risks for regulated industries
  •
  • Supports the growing need for sovereign AI and secure data handling
  •

The expansion covers five continents and is now available in preview in countries including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. European Union availability is expected in June 2026.

Equinix Fabric already connects customers in 77 metros worldwide. The addition of Geo Zones builds on this strong backbone to offer better protection for organisations operating in Africa and other regions with strict data localisation laws.

This development is particularly relevant for African banks, governments, telecoms, and tech companies that handle sensitive citizen data and are under pressure to comply with emerging data protection regulations across the continent.

Equinix says the solution forms part of its broader push to support AI growth while maintaining strict sovereignty controls. It will be offered as a premium service on the Fabric platform.

The expansion reflects the rising importance of secure, compliant digital infrastructure as more African businesses move critical operations to the cloud.
